The people of Malawi is one of the most welcoming of the African continent. It’s called happy “warm land of Africa.” Nevertheless, Malawi is a country well known in Africa in part because it has no mineral resources on the other by what it is not (yet) a country that has open to tourism. But Malawi is among the many African countries a little gem. This is explained by the many large lakes and the precious nature reserves and national parks, large and spectacular highlands, and because of its rich cultural heritage. The country takes its name from Lake Malawi which figs in 3rd place of the largest lakes in Africa. In the lake has the largest number of species of freshwater fish compared to other lakes in Africa.
Formerly known as Nyasaland, Malawi was today beginning an African kingdom. The Portuguese discovered the country in the 16th century and made in the following centuries the Arabs along with a reservoir of slaves. The influence of the Christian mission took off following the explorations of Livingstone. Nyasaland became a British protectorate in 1891. Independence was granted July 6, 1964. At that time the country took the name of Malawi.
The first president Dr Kamuzu Hastings Banda was called. He ruled the country with an iron hand and was declared president for life in 1970.
The first democratic elections were held in 1994. Bakali Muluzi was elected president. Currently Bingu Wa Muthanika is the president of Malawi in office.
Malawi is among the five poorest nations in the world. The average income of Malawi is $ 160 per year. About 85% of workers find employment in agriculture. It grows tobacco and tea are exported.
The main problems of Malawi are: rapid population growth, rural migration, education deficit and the many medical problems such as the fight against infectious diseases such as malaria (malaria) and AIDS and finally nutritional deficiencies .
Farmers practice subsistence farming is to say, they highlight a piece of land sufficient for their needs. In addition they raise animals and others such as rabbits. It goes without saying that this form of agriculture is not enough to meet demand. Trade is almost non-existent which is why farmers have no income of their own. The staple food of Malawi is maize. Other food products include potatoes, cassava (manioc species), peanuts and bananas they cook.
